August 2013

Welcome to Crop Quest Inc.'s first blog post! Our blog will be updated monthly with information about nutrient management, as well as updates about the company and what we do.

Hi, I’m Amy VanStraaten, working with Cropquest as a certified nutrient management planner.

We felt it would be good to offer some information about what Nutrient Management is, and to
give you someone to ask any questions you may have.

The Nutrient Management Act came into effect in 2002, and has been revised over the years. Its purpose is to help ensure safe drinking water in Ontario. Requirements under the Act are determined by the size of a livestock operation, which is measure in Nutrient Units. The use of Nutrtient Units allows comparisons between the variety of livestock in Ontario, from mink, to

poultry, to hogs and cattle.

One nutrient unit (NU) is equivalent to :

·         3   Beef  Feeders (7 - 16 months)

·         150   Laying Hens

·         8   Dairy Goats

·         20   Weaner pigs

If you would like more information about the scope of Nutrient Management Planning, or if you have any questions please feel free to direct them to me, either by email or by phone.
